French Doors

Classic double doors, quietly refined.

A pair of hinged glazed doors, opening from a central meeting point — the most timeless way to link a home to its garden. Ours are designed with slim sightlines and generous glass, so they read as elegant, not chunky.

We build them to any opening size, in Accoya or hardwood, with sidelights, toplights and Georgian bars available as standard. Multi-point espagnolette locking, weather seals on every edge and a factory-sprayed finish in any RAL, Farrow & Ball, Little Greene or matched colour — dual-colour inside and outside if you want it.

They suit period homes, cottages, extensions and orangeries — anywhere a full bifold would feel like overkill but a single door isn't enough.

French Door Specification

Made to spec, made to last.

Every French door set is fully specified to your opening — sizes, sidelights, glazing, hardware and finish all detailed before we start.

Timber

Accoya (recommended), engineered hardwood or oak. Factory-finished with microporous paint or stain in any RAL, Farrow & Ball, Little Greene or matched colour. Dual-colour spray as standard — different colour inside and outside if you want it.

Glazing

24mm double-glazed units as standard, using Planitherm One glass — centre-pane U-value 1.0 W/m²K. Internally glazed for security — the glass is fitted from the inside, so there are no external beads that can be prised off. Vacuum glazing available as an upgrade — whole-door U-values as low as 1.0 W/m²K. Argon fill, low-E, toughened as standard, acoustic and triple glazing available.

Configuration

Pair of doors from 1.4m to 2m wide. Sidelights and toplights available in matching profile. Georgian bars, astragal bars or clear glass.

Hardware

Espagnolette multi-point locking as standard. Lever/lever or lever/pad handles in polished brass, satin chrome, antique bronze or matte black.

Guarantee

30 years against rot and warping on Accoya frames. 10 years on hardware and glazing. HomePro insurance-backed.

Compliance

Certass registered, Approved Document L (thermal) and Q (security) compliant. PAS24 available. Listed Building Consent supported.

Bifold Doors

Fold back a whole wall.

Bifold doors concertina along a track and stack cleanly to one or both sides, giving you an uninterrupted opening the full width of your wall — perfect for kitchens, garden rooms and extensions where the room and the garden should feel like the same space.

Ours are made from engineered timber for stability across large spans, run on quality German-engineered hardware, and lock with multi-point security at every leaf. Available in 3, 4, 5 or 6-panel configurations up to 6m wide.

Unlike aluminium, timber bifolds work beautifully on period homes, listed properties and conservation-area extensions — offering the same views without the industrial look.

3, 4, 5 or 6-panel configurations. Widths from 2m to 6m. Fold-outward (typical) or fold-inward. Traffic door option for daily use without opening the full set.

Double glazing as standard, U-values from 1.4 W/m²K. Toughened safety glass throughout. Triple glazing and solar-control options.

Running Gear

German-engineered top-hung running gear for smooth operation and long life. Concealed drainage. Low threshold options for level access.

Which is right for you?

French or bifold — a quick guide.

Choose French doors if — your opening is between 1.4m and 2m, you want a traditional look, you're working on a period property, or you like the idea of leaving one door open while the other stays closed. Simpler mechanism, lower cost, easier to fit.

Choose bifold doors if — your opening is over 2m, you want the whole wall to open up onto a garden or patio, you're doing a modern kitchen or garden-room extension, or you want maximum glass area. More complex mechanism, higher spec, wow-factor.

What to know before you commission.

What's the difference between French doors and bifold doors?

French doors are a pair of hinged doors that swing open from a central meeting point — typically covering an opening 1.4m to 2m wide. Bifold doors concertina-fold along a track and stack neatly to one or both sides, letting you open up much wider spans (typically 2m up to 6m). French doors suit period homes and traditional interiors; bifolds are ideal when you want a whole wall to open onto a garden or patio.

How much do bespoke timber French doors cost?

Bespoke double-glazed timber French doors typically range from £2,400 to £4,500 fitted, depending on size, timber species, glazing specification, hardware and any sidelights. Sidelights and toplights are quoted per panel. Every project gets a fixed, itemised quote after a free on-site survey.

How much do bespoke timber bifold doors cost?

Bespoke timber bifold doors typically range from £4,500 to £8,500+ fitted, depending on width, number of leaves (3, 4, 5 or 6-panel), timber species, glazing spec and hardware. Larger 5m and 6m schemes are quoted individually after survey.

Can I get French doors with sidelights?

Yes — sidelights and toplights are one of the most popular ways to widen a French door set without losing the traditional look. We commonly design French door sets with matching fixed sidelights on one or both sides, or a full-height toplight, all coordinated in the same timber and finish.

Are timber bifolds as good as aluminium?

For character, warmth and heritage homes — timber wins. Modern engineered timber bifolds offer excellent thermal performance (U-values from 1.4 W/m²K), smooth action on quality German-engineered running gear, and multi-point locking that meets PAS24. Timber bifolds are also the only choice on listed properties and in conservation areas where aluminium isn't permitted.

Which way should bifolds fold — inside or outside?

Most bifolds fold outward, which keeps the room space free when open and works well onto patios and gardens. Inward-folding is possible where outside space is tight or covered. We'll advise on the best configuration during survey based on your room layout, floor level and outside space.

Do you install French and bifold doors, or supply only?

Both — but 95% of our work is supply-and-install. Our own team handle everything from free on-site survey through to final installation. Certass registered installers with a HomePro insurance-backed guarantee. We rarely supply-only because getting the survey and fit right is critical for these products.
