Start by checking what is permitted for your particular property. Listed status, an Article 4 direction, the existing windows and the proposed changes can all affect what is acceptable. York's historic-window guidance distinguishes retaining and repairing historic windows from replacing them, so new double-glazed windows should not be assumed to be acceptable in every case.
